Cacao
Ceremonies
Ceremonial Cacao has been worked with as a sacred plant medicine for thousands of years in Mesoamerica. Mama Cacao (the spirit of the Cacao tree) can be seen as a dooropener into the world of medicine. She guides us deeper into connection with ourselves, each other, our hearts, nature, our spiritual practice and the present moment.

A sacred journey back to your heart
For thousands of years, cacao has been a bridge between worlds — a gentle teacher guiding us back to our hearts, our bodies, and our connection with nature. In our ceremonies, we weave together wisdom from our experiences with living in the Amazonian rainforest together with Nordic traditions and music, creating a space where transformation can unfold naturally and at your own pace.
What is a Cacao Ceremony?
A Cacao Ceremony is a ceremony with Cacao, where we enter into sacred space, into ritual, guided by the spirit of Cacao. It is a space where we leave the noicy, highpace stress of everyday life and enter into a pace where we can slow down, listen and receive medicine - from within and around.
These ceremonies offer an opportunity to:
Journey inward and connect with your heart's wisdom
Release what no longer serves you
Set intentions and vision for your life
Experience deep relaxation and meditation
Connect with community in authentic ways
Deepen your connection to nature
Our ceremonies blend meditative practices, gentle movement, live acoustic music, and silent reflection—creating a container for whatever needs to emerge.
What is Ceremonial Cacao?
Ceremonial Cacao differs from the hot cocoa many of us enjoyed as children. It’s made from 100% pure, directly traded Cacao, processed by hand using traditional methods.
Our Cacao comes from trees growing naturally in the rainforests of Guatemala and Mexico, of the original variety of Criollo beans, cared for by local communities that hand-peel each bean with love and respect - and a proper salery to the workers e.g. Direct Trade.
As a contrast where around 70% of the world’s chocolate production comes from African plantages (monoulture with hybrid beans and use of pesticides) where the farmers earn less than 1$/day and childlabour is still practiced.
Ceremonial Cacao is a whole food, with nothing added or removed, and we only combine it with water and a few simple spices when preparing it for ceremonies. Every part of the process, from the rainforest trees to the ceremonial cup, is infused with love and care.
Physical Properties
Cacao is rich in natural compounds that support both physical and emotional wellbeing:
Theobromine: A gentle cardiovascular stimulant that supports focus and clarity (we call it the sweet cousin of coffeine)
Anandamide: Known as the "bliss molecule"
Magnesium: Supports relaxation and heart health
PEA (Phenethylamine): Enhances focus and mood
Antioxidants: Support overall wellness
Why Develop a Deeper Relationship with Cacao?
In our modern world, we often move quickly, disconnected from the sacred in our daily lives. Developing a relationship with Cacao as a plantspirit teacher can offer:
A bridge between the mundane and the sacred
A gentle way to maintain heart-centered awareness
Support for creative and spiritual practices
Connection to ancient plant wisdom traditions & nature as a whole
A sustainable practice for emotional wellbeing
Our relationship with cacao has deepened through years of working with plant teachers in the Amazon rainforest, where we learned the importance of approaching plants with respect and reverence. While our work is inspired by various traditions, we create ceremonies that honor both the spirit of cacao and our Nordic roots. Our ceremonies blend:
Traditional Amazonian Plant spirit Icaros & practices
Nordic shamanic traditions
Sound healing and voice work
Gentle movement and somatic embodiment
Silent meditation and reflection
Community sharing and connection
… and we usually end ceremonies with a beautiful potluck of yummy food…
Each ceremony is acoustic, featuring live music and medicine songs that help deepen your journey with cacao.

Our Cacao
Sourced from non-hybridized trees in ancient tropical rainforests, our ceremonial cacao is minimally processed to preserve its natural integrity. It is a special offering from the Mayan people of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, who have worked with cacao for generations.

Ceremonial Grade Cacao is a title for a type of Cacao (a bit like when something is fair trade, however ceremonial cacao is not an official certification). It generally means that it is:
Sourced from heritage cacao varieties (e.g. Criollo) and not hybrid beans. The original beans are often smaller, harder to process and grow, but also have higher levels of psychoactive ingredients and all the yumminess we want in ceremonial cacao
Grown in natural rainforest environments (no monoculture)
Harvested and processed with ceremonial intention
Made from whole beans with no additives - and also nothing is taken away
The beans are minimally processed and handmade. For example, they are dried in the sun, not with machines. They are roasted at low temperatures to prese hand-pulled. This ensures that as much of the psychoactive properties are retained as possible, but also that the quality is increased, for example, by sorting out the bad beans (which is not done in a huge machine).
The local men and women who work with the Cacao are paid a decent wage and treated properly.

A cacao ceremony is a sacred container where we use cacao as a plant teacher to:
Open our hearts and deepen self-connection
Journey inward through meditation
Set intentions and receive guidance
Work with personal transformation
Connect deeper to the wisdom of nature
A typical ceremony (2-4 hours) includes:
Sacred space creation
Connection with the cacao spirit
Guided journey or meditation
Sharing and integration
Grounding practices
All of our Cacao ceremonies are acoustic, guided by medicine songs, icaros and sounds.
However, others might make their ceremonies different.

Glad you asked! This is an important topic - and also a senisitve one with many opinions.
Our perspective is that Cacao has a rich history of ceremonial use spanning thousands of years and many different Mesoamerican cultures such as the Mayo Chinchipe, The Olmecs, The Toltec, The Aztecs and the Mayans. We see a exchange of culture, Cacao and ritual throughout these thousands of years of these different cultures throughout Mesoamerica. We honor and acknowledge this ancestral lineage and recognizing that plant medicines, including cacao, transcend cultural boundaries and speak to people across time and traditions. You cannot owe a plant spirit but you can attribute specific rituals to a culture and taking those specific rituals without permission might be considered cultural appropriation - and working with any practices without permission doesn’t truly work. The energy doesn’t truly flow. It is not worth it.
We feel that Cacao is stepping out of the jungle to teach us how to reconnect to the earth and earth-based practices - not only where Cacao originates from - but where we are living and what linages we have in our bones and blood.
We create contemporary rituals that respect the origins of ceremonial cacao while allowing this sacred plant to guide us in deepening the connection to the nature here and the ancient culture here, in ways that authentically resonate with our own path and community.
Our ceremonies draw inspiration from the Nordic shamanic tradition, our study with the shipibo lineage in the Amazonian jungle, our yoga teacher training in India and our own deep practice with Cacao. While we have been in the Mayan “highlands” and attended ceremonies within this tradition, we do not claim our practice with Cacao as traditional Mayan or indigenous ceremony.
By sourcing our cacao ethically from indigenous producers, acknowledging its cultural roots, and developing our own meaningful relationship with this medicine, we strive to engage with cacao in a way that shows deep respect for both ancient wisdom and modern exploration.
